1% of the population have a condition known as narcissistic personality disorder, a pathology that is partly defined by low empathy. Colloquially people refer to these people as narcissists, but narcissism as a general concept is a component of every healthy psyche – even people with empathy.

Maccoby, a Harvard Business School professor who has written multiple books on the topic of narcissism in leadership, has talked about Obama specifically on multiple occasions and goes into far more detail than my humble article. If curious, I can suggest you check out his work, which I linked to in the post.

As for charisma and visionary leadership, I understand the intent behind your claim — particularly if the word narcissism is linked to 'bad person' and the pathological condition. That's actually why I wrote the post, to explain the parts of narcissism, defined on Wikipedia here, that aren't bad and open the conversation from the 1% of people with a condition to the 99% of people that could benefit from a better understanding of the term (and founders in particular).
